Choose the lowest Smartlead plan that meets your contact-storage, sending, and workflow requirements with reasonable headroom. Do not choose by company size alone. A small agency with several clients can have more complex access requirements than a larger business running one campaign.
This guide checks Smartlead pricing as of October 15, 2026 and explains how to turn a campaign plan into a buying decision. Software capacity is an allowance, not a recommendation to send at that volume.
Current Smartlead pricing
The official Smartlead pricing page lists the following USD monthly options. Annual billing displays different effective monthly prices.
| Plan | Monthly subscription | Listed contact capacity | Listed monthly email sends |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | $39 | 2,000 | 6,000 |
| Pro | $94 | 30,000 | 90,000 |
| Unlimited Smart | $174 | Unlimited | 150,000 |
| Unlimited Prime | $379 | Unlimited | 500,000 |
These are the current plan names, replacing the generic Basic, Advanced, and Custom categories used in the earlier version of this article. The word “Unlimited” does not remove the stated send allowance or the constraints of your mailbox providers.
The page also describes optional services and client workspaces. Ask Smartlead to confirm verification entitlements, add-ons, and access requirements for your exact configuration, rather than assuming every number displayed is included in the subscription. Save the accepted quote or checkout details with your operating budget.
Calculate contacts and sends separately
Contact storage and monthly sends answer different questions. Storage describes the records you need to keep available. Sends include initial emails and follow-ups that fall within the billing period.
A simple planning calculation is:
Planned sends = contacts entering a sequence × planned email steps, adjusted for timing and stops.
For illustration, 1,500 contacts with up to three emails each creates a ceiling of 4,500 scheduled sends. That is a hypothetical planning example, not a recommended campaign volume. Actual sends can be lower when people reply, opt out, bounce, or are removed before a later step.
Also account for sequences that started in the previous month. A new batch of 1,500 contacts is not your only workload if older campaigns still have follow-ups due. Build the forecast from scheduled activity, not just new leads uploaded.
When Base may be enough
Start by evaluating Base when your approved contact set and planned activity fit its limits and you do not need a feature or access arrangement that requires another configuration. This can be appropriate for a focused pilot with a clear owner.
Before launch, check imports, personalization previews, suppression, reply assignment, and CRM handoff. If those fail, buying more capacity is unlikely to solve the underlying problem. Resolve the workflow first.
Avoid filling the account with every contact your data provider can export. A smaller, relevant lead list makes research and message review more manageable.
When to evaluate Pro or a higher tier
Evaluate an upgrade when you can identify the specific limit or required capability that is blocking approved work. Examples include a larger retained contact set, more scheduled follow-ups, or client-management requirements.
For agency use, ask how clients are separated, what each user can access, how reporting is scoped, and which workspace costs apply. Test the permissions with a sample client view before relying on them operationally.
For higher-volume programs, verify that your team can maintain list quality and answer the resulting conversations. A plan with more sends should follow a justified operating requirement, not create pressure to contact unsuitable buyers.
Budget beyond the subscription
A complete outbound budget includes more than Smartlead:
- Domains and mailboxes used by the program.
- Data sourcing, contact verification, and enrichment.
- Research and message approval.
- Integrations and ongoing maintenance.
- Reply handling, qualification, and sales follow-up.
- Any required optional platform services.
Separate one-time setup work from recurring costs. Compare actual spend with your original assumptions after the pilot. If manual cleanup consumes hours each week, record that cost instead of treating automation as free because it runs in software.
Our cost per lead guide explains how to keep cost definitions and lead definitions consistent.
How Clay fits into a Smartlead workflow
Use Clay to organize account research, qualification, and personalization inputs before campaign entry. Keep the evidence behind important claims, and have missing or conflicting evidence trigger review.
A practical record can include company domain, buyer role, source URL, observation date, verification status, approved message, and campaign destination. Test whether the integration maps each field correctly and whether repeating the workflow creates a duplicate.
Keep a shared suppression process so an opted-out contact is not accidentally reintroduced by a later enrichment job. Our Clay consulting agency can help define these controls and the handoff to the sending platform.
What an agency should explain before you pay
Ask a cold email agency to justify the proposed Smartlead configuration using your campaign assumptions. A useful answer names the expected contact set, planned sequence activity, required integrations, operator responsibilities, and complete recurring cost.
Ask who owns the domains, mailboxes, data, campaigns, and suppression records. Request an export and transition process before signing. Also agree on the difference between an interested reply, a booked meeting, a held qualified meeting, and an accepted opportunity.
If LinkedIn is part of the program, assign responsibility for coordinating it with email. Our LinkedIn lead generation service addresses that channel, but a combined campaign still needs one clear account-level view of activity and replies.
Frequently asked questions
Does a more expensive Smartlead plan guarantee inbox placement?
No. Subscription capacity does not establish delivery performance. Authentication, reputation, address quality, and recipient response still matter. Use the deliverability guide to investigate problems before increasing volume.
Should I buy annual billing immediately?
First validate that the configuration fits your workflow and that you understand the billing commitment. A lower effective monthly price is useful only when the plan and commitment suit your needs.
What should I do when I approach a limit?
Review scheduled activity, stored records, and required features. Remove records only under a deliberate retention policy that preserves necessary history and suppression. Compare an upgrade with a narrower campaign scope rather than treating maximum volume as the objective.
