AI outbound sales uses AI to help research accounts, find relevant contacts, qualify buying signals and prepare outreach. In a connected ChatGPT workflow, you describe the campaign in one conversation while tools such as BlitzAPI and Clay handle the data work. You still decide who to target, what to offer and when a campaign is ready to send.

The useful starting point is a company list you can narrow to your market. This guide shows how to take that list through research, enrichment, email validation and campaign review. It follows the workflow I demonstrate in the video below, including the point where the output is ready for approval.

Can you build an outbound campaign from ChatGPT?

Yes, when ChatGPT has access to the tools required for each step. ChatGPT can help plan the campaign and coordinate connected actions. A prompt by itself does not provide a current contact database, validate an email address or create a sending account.

In our recorded pilot, the workflow produces researched contacts and personalized email drafts in a Google Sheet. Nothing is sent during that pilot. A production version can hand approved records to a connected sending platform, with the audience, copy and launch action reviewed first.

Think of three separate layers: the conversation where you make decisions, the tools that retrieve or update data, and the record of what happened. Keeping those layers clear makes errors easier to find.

What tools do you need for AI outbound sales?

You need tools that cover the jobs in your campaign. You do not need a separate subscription for every possible data point. Start with your existing stack and add a provider only when it fills a specific gap.

JobTool or input in this workflowWhat to check

Initial account listfrontBrick’s free company datasetWhether the segment fits your offer and the records are current enough for your use.

Email validationA validation provider in your waterfallResult status, check date and treatment of uncertain records.
Review and activationA Google Sheet or CRM, then your sending platformField mapping, duplicates, suppression rules and approval before launch.

BlitzAPI’s MCP documentation explains how its tools expose company, people and job searches to AI assistants. Clay’s outbound overview covers research, signals, messaging and sequencing options. The exact actions available in your ChatGPT connection depend on the integration and its permissions.

For a wider tool evaluation, use our guide to choosing a connected outbound stack.

Before you start: connect and test the tools

  1. Write down the required actions. For example: search companies, find people, research a website, validate an email and export a row. Separate reading data from changing it.
  2. Connect the relevant accounts. Use supported apps or a custom MCP connection where available. Follow OpenAI’s current custom MCP setup guidance for your plan and workspace. Have an administrator approve access when required.
  3. Check what is actually available. Ask ChatGPT to list the relevant actions it can call. Do not assume that connecting a tool exposes every feature from its web app.
  4. Test one known account. Confirm the company match, returned fields and output destination. Test a write action with a clearly marked test record before using live campaign data.
  5. Set a budget and approval rule. Agree which paid operations can run, the batch size and the maximum spend. If a provider’s cost is unclear, resolve it before the batch.

Step 1: turn the company dataset into a target account list

The dataset is a starting point for account selection. It is not a ready-to-send list of people. The resource includes company information such as company name, website, LinkedIn URL and industry. Filter by industry, size and location to define a useful first segment.

For example, a web design agency might begin with software companies in a specific market and size range. It would then check whether those businesses match its project size, expertise and offer. A company belonging to the right industry is only one part of qualification.

Normalize domains, remove duplicates and compare the list against existing customers, active opportunities and exclusions. Review a small sample of websites before enriching the full segment. A dataset can contain stale or incomplete records, so verify the details that drive your decision.

Your output: one row per account, a stable company identifier, the reason it fits and any exclusion reason. This is a target account list, not proof that every company is ready to buy.

Step 2: give ChatGPT a campaign brief it can act on

Describe the customer, the problem, your offer and the evidence you can use. Ask the agent to show its proposed rules before sourcing people or spending on enrichment.

Help me prepare an outbound pilot for [offer]. Target [industry] companies in [locations] with [size range]. Exclude [customers, competitors and unsuitable accounts]. The buyer is [role]. Use the attached company CSV as the starting point. First propose qualification rules and a relevant campaign signal. Show the connected tools, required fields and estimated usage costs. Do not run paid enrichment or send messages until I approve. Use source links for factual claims and mark missing information as unknown.

Replace the brackets with your campaign details. This is a planning prompt for a connected workflow, not an installation script. If an action is unavailable, decide whether to connect the missing tool or handle that step manually.

Step 3: choose a signal that makes the offer relevant

A useful signal gives you a reason to contact an account now. It must connect to the problem your offer solves. A new marketing leader may be relevant to a positioning or website project; a funding announcement alone does not prove a company needs your service.

Define the event, the source, how recent it needs to be and what would disqualify it. Separate the observed fact from your interpretation. “The company appointed a CMO” is a fact you can verify. “The new CMO wants a rebrand” is a hypothesis unless you have evidence.

For one premium branding and web design agency, frontBrick used a new-hire signal to open a conversation with Fathom. We sourced the opportunity in the first four weeks of the engagement. The agency later closed a $90K project. That example shows why timing and offer fit matter; it is not a forecast for another campaign.

Your output: the signal, source URL, observation date, relevance explanation and a clear pass or review status.

Step 4: find people and enrich only the fields you need

Once an account qualifies, identify the role responsible for the problem. Use BlitzAPI for the available sourcing steps and Clay for the research and enrichment your campaign requires. Confirm that the person still works at the matched company.

Work backwards from the message. If your offer depends on a new executive hire, verify the role and timing. If it depends on a technology, verify that technology. Collecting extra fields without a decision attached increases cost and makes review harder.

Give every important claim a source. Keep separate fields for what the source says and what the agent concludes. Route conflicting or missing evidence to review rather than filling gaps with plausible text.

For teams implementing the data layer, our Clay consulting and implementation service covers research, enrichment and connected workflows.

Step 5: validate emails and keep uncertain records separate

Email discovery and email validation are different tasks. Discovery finds a candidate address. Validation checks its status using the selected provider. Neither step proves that the recipient wants your message.

Run your approved waterfall and record which provider returned the result. Keep the validation status and date. Do not quietly mix unknown, catch-all or otherwise uncertain results into the same approved batch as records that meet your sending policy.

Use one contact identifier to prevent duplicate outreach across campaigns. Apply your suppression list before exporting, and again before sending. If a contact opts out or becomes an active opportunity, that status should reach every connected system that could contact them.

Step 6: write outreach from verified context

Personalization should explain why your offer matters to this buyer. Mentioning a hobby or copying a sentence from a website is not a substitute for that connection.

Using only the verified fields in this row, draft a short email for [buyer role]. Connect [observed signal] to [relevant problem] and offer [specific next step]. Keep it under 90 words. Do not invent a pain point, result or relationship. If the signal does not support the offer, mark the row for review instead of writing the email.

Review a small batch for factual accuracy, relevance and tone. Check that the message does not turn an inference into a claim. Approve a clear next step, such as offering a relevant example or asking whether the problem is on their agenda.

In the video, the Google Sheet is the review surface. A production workflow can use a CRM or another shared destination. Keep the research, draft and decision together so a reviewer can understand why the message exists.

Step 7: approve the handoff, then measure the campaign

Before launch, confirm the recipient list, final copy, sending account, schedule and reply owner. Make sure a reply or opt-out stops the relevant follow-ups. A successful export is not proof that a campaign has launched.

Check your sending setup against the requirements of the email providers you use. Google’s email sender guidelines explain authentication and other requirements for personal Gmail recipients, including additional rules for bulk senders. Technical authentication does not guarantee inbox placement.

Measure the stages separately: qualified accounts, usable contacts, delivered messages, interested replies, held meetings and accepted opportunities. Track research time and total cost as well. Use the same definitions and time window when comparing a manual process with an AI-assisted one.

How much does an AI outbound workflow cost?

The dataset is free to access. Running the complete workflow can involve paid AI access, data providers, research, validation, sending software and implementation work. A free company list does not make every later step free.

Estimate costs by operation and test the estimate on a small batch. Include unsuccessful lookups where the provider charges for them, plus retries and review time.

Cost categoryWhat to ask before buying
Fixed subscriptionsWhich tools do we already have, and which plan exposes the required actions?
Data and research usageWhat is charged per lookup, enrichment or research run? Are failed results billed?
Email validationHow many records will be checked, and when will they need rechecking?
Sending and operationsWho pays for mailboxes, sequencing, monitoring and reply handling?
Implementation and maintenanceWho builds, documents, monitors and repairs the workflow?

A useful calculation is total pilot cost divided by contacts that pass your quality rules. After launch, also compare cost per held qualified meeting and accepted opportunity. Lower research cost is useful only if the output remains relevant and accurate.

Should you use an AI SDR platform or build a connected workflow?

Choose based on the work you need to control. A packaged platform may suit a team that wants a defined process and less integration work. A connected workflow may suit a team with specific qualification rules, existing tools and a need to keep its data and approval process visible.

OptionWhen it may fitWhat to evaluate
Manual research with AI draftingSmall volumes or an offer you are still testingTime per account and whether research is consistent.
Packaged AI SDR platformA team whose process fits the product’s supported workflowData sources, limits, approval controls, reporting and export options.
ChatGPT with connected toolsA team that needs custom research and campaign decisions across its stackIntegration coverage, cost controls, error handling and an owner for maintenance.
Implementation partnerA team that wants a custom system but lacks build capacityScope, documentation, account ownership, handover and ongoing support.

Ask a vendor to demonstrate your actual use case on a small sample. Inspect source evidence, duplicate handling, uncertain results and the final output. A polished demo is less useful than understanding how the system handles a record it cannot qualify.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use AI for lead generation?

Yes. AI can help define an audience, research accounts, classify signals and draft outreach. For usable contact data, connect a current data source and validate the returned records. Measure whether the workflow creates qualified conversations, not just more rows.

What is the best AI tool for lead generation?

The best choice depends on your bottleneck. If you lack accounts, evaluate data coverage. If research is slow, evaluate research and enrichment. If you already have usable data, improve messaging or handoff. In this workflow, ChatGPT coordinates the work while BlitzAPI and Clay supply specific capabilities.

Can ChatGPT find verified email addresses by itself?

A generated email address is not a verified contact. Use a connected provider to retrieve candidate addresses and a validation step to check them. Require the workflow to show the provider, result and check date rather than treating confident wording as evidence.

Can I start for free?

You can start with the free company dataset and manually review a segment. The full connected workflow may require paid accounts or usage credits. Check the tools you already have before buying more, and approve the cost of a small pilot first.

Will AI replace SDRs?

AI can take on parts of research, data preparation and drafting. Your team still needs someone to own the audience, offer, factual claims, exceptions and buyer conversations. Evaluate which tasks become easier before making a staffing decision.

What is the biggest mistake in AI lead generation?

Scaling before checking whether the audience, evidence and offer fit together. Faster enrichment does not fix the wrong market. Review a small sample, confirm a real reason to reach out and measure the quality of replies before increasing volume.

Do I need to code?

You can direct an already connected workflow in plain language. Setting up integrations, permissions, reliable field mapping and failure handling may need technical work. Ask who will maintain the system when a provider changes its API or a connection expires.

Can this work with our existing CRM?

Often, but confirm the available integration actions before scoping the build. Agree matching keys, required fields, ownership and overwrite rules. Test against a sample record, then verify that replies, opt-outs and opportunity status remain consistent across the workflow.

What should we ask an implementation partner?

Ask which steps are included, which accounts you own, what usage costs are separate, how failures are handled and what documentation you receive. Agree what a successful pilot means and who operates the system after handover.

Start with one market and one campaign

Download a shortlist, check the accounts and choose a signal that connects to your offer. Then build the research, contact and review steps around that decision. You will learn more from a small campaign you can inspect than from a large list you cannot explain.
